The power plant of the SUV is 172 horsepower less
GMC’s chief engineer explained why the Hummer EV SUV, unveiled last weekend, received a lower powertrain despite sharing a platform with the pickup.
From a technical point of view, the GMC Hummer EV in the station wagon largely repeats the pickup of the same name, but there are still differences – for example, the power plant of an SUV develops 842 horsepower, although the pickup boasts 1014 horsepower. Why this happened, explained in an interview with Muscle Cars & Trucks the chief engineer of the Hummer EV project at GMC Al Openheiser. The fact is that the Hummer EV SUV has a 227 millimeters shorter wheelbase, which, coupled with a reduced rear overhang, makes the SUV 508 millimeters shorter in length than the pickup. This means that there is physically less space left for the traction battery, which inevitably affects the power of the power plant.
According to Openheiser, engineers could have fitted the Hummer EV SUV with a battery the same size as the Hummer EV pickup, but that would have reduced the space in the cabin and luggage compartment, so this solution was eventually abandoned. “To be honest, we do not regret that the SUV has only 842 horsepower left. Not very many internal combustion engines can boast of such power, ”added the chief engineer. In addition, reducing the overall length and overhangs of an SUV has advantages in terms of cross-country ability.
